A NEARLY RECORD-SETTING OR RECORD SETTING HEAT WAVE AND TOTAL LACK OF RAINFALL THE PAST FEW WEEKS HAS CAUSED EXTREME LOW AND “HOT” WATER. WE’RE SEEING WATER LEVELS AT THE LOWEST WE’VE EVER SEEN, WITH MANY “MEDIUM” SIZED STREAMS LIKE THE TOBYHANNA, UPPER LEHIGH AND BROADHEADS RUNNING AT 26 TO 50 CFS. WATER TEMPERATURES DURING THE DAY ON MANY STREAMS LIKE THESE ARE IN THE 80S. SOME POCONO STREAMS ARE REGISTERING WATER TEMPS OF 81 TO 86 DEGREES F.

OBVIOUSLY WE’RE NOT OUT FISHING MUCH THESE DAYS AND WE’RE HOPING FOR RAIN AND A COOL-DOWN. A FEW “FISHABLE” AREAS ARE THE LEHIGH BELOW THE DAM, THE LOWER LACKAWAXEN, THE WEST BRANCH OF THE DELAWARE. THESE AREAS HAVE COOLER WATER TEMPERATURES DUE TO CONTROLLED WATER RELEASES.

Here’s a helpful tip when buying or tying flies to match a hatch throughout the fishing season. Let’s say you’re fishing a particular hatch and targeting a fish or several fish. Let’s use a Sulphur for example. Often when there is one or a few fish rising in an area, feeding on Sulphurs, we may pick up a fish or two using a particular pattern. If, for example you caught a few fish on a sulphur parachute, but find that this pattern stops working and fish refuse to eat the fly, you may want to consider simply chnging-up a little. Have a few variations of the Sulphur in your fly box. I often carry 2 or 3 varieties of a same fly, like a Sulphur. In my box I’ll have Sulphur parachutes with cdc loop wings, some extended body parachutes and some thorax style Sulphurs. I catch a fish or two, can’t catch the other few fish I’ve attempted to catch and then switch patterns to mix-it-up a little. This method will very often help pick up an extra fish or two in each instance. This has proven to be very successful for me with most mayfly and caddis patterns. Hope this helps.

I gave the Simms Headwaters Wading Boots with the inserted hardbite studs a try this past weekend. The studs were easy to insert using a cordless drill/driver. The boots fit very well, were very easy to get on and off, were comfortable and noticeably light. I chose the Headwaters because I put on a few miles fishing this past weekend and thought these lightweight boots would help when hiking some miles. I was not disappointed. The hardbite studs made for some confident wading and definitely helped in some tough footing. Great boots and studs. Highly recommend these. As usual, Simms has made a great product for Fishermen!

Many Fly Fishermen often have trouble seeing their fly, especially as we get older, and especially when using those size 20, 22 and smaller flies. We often hear complaints from our clients at A.A. Outfitters about not being able to see smaller flies and midges. Often some great fishing is passed-up because many are hesitant to use a small enough fly. We can offer a few helpful hints to those confronted with situation.

Firstly, it isn’t always necessary to see exactly where your fly is. If you make a cast and can’t see your fly, let it drift. Don’t give up on the cast. Watch the general area where your fly is. If there’s a rise in that area, even though you cannot exactly locate your fly, assume the strike may be to your fly and set the hook. In most or many cases this can be successful. Another great tip I can recommend when using very small flies or if you have trouble finding your fly on the water is to use a very small strike indicator. A putty type indicator like Loon Biostrike works great for this. Simply take a very small piece (about the size of a BB or pea) of strike indicator putty in a hi-vis color and place it on your leader about 16 or 18 inches from your fly. You’ll get used to relating where your fly is in relation to your strike indicator and this will help you locate your fly. If you still cannot find your fly on the water, just watch the strike indicator. If there’s a rise near the indicator or if the indicator disappears, set the hook. This “mini-indicator” type fishing helps not only with small fly fishing, but is also very helpful when fishing at dusk/dark or in other low visibility situations.

We want to give an updae for fishing conditions here in the Poconos / Northeast Pa for the first week of April, 2010. We had a bunch of rain/snow about 7 days to 2 weeks ago. Water levels were high because of this, up until yesterday so there hasn’t been too much fishing. Checking today, water levels have gotten to fishable and the weather has been great the past few days. Today it’s actually 84 degrees here in the Poconos … rare for the first week of April. A few Guys have been out in the Clubs and Special Regs areas the past few days and are catching fish, mostly on nymphs, beadheads and streamers/wooly buggers.

Stop in the Shop – A.A. Outfitters Fly Shop here in Blakeslee, Pa. We’re fully stocked and ready to go. Call 800-443-8119 for more info.
