HAVING TROUBLE SEEING YOUR FLY? HELPFUL HINTS FROM A.A. OUTFITTERS

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Many Fly Fishermen often have trouble seeing their fly, especially as we get older, and especially when using those size 20, 22 and smaller flies. We often hear complaints from our clients at A.A. Outfitters about not being able to see smaller flies and midges. Often some great fishing is passed-up because many are hesitant to use a small enough fly. We can offer a few helpful hints to those confronted with situation.

Firstly, it isn’t always necessary to see exactly where your fly is. If you make a cast and can’t see your fly, let it drift. Don’t give up on the cast. Watch the general area where your fly is. If there’s a rise in that area, even though you cannot exactly locate your fly, assume the strike may be to your fly and set the hook. In most or many cases this can be successful. Another great tip I can recommend when using very small flies or if you have trouble finding your fly on the water is to use a very small strike indicator. A putty type indicator like Loon Biostrike works great for this. Simply take a very small piece (about the size of a BB or pea) of strike indicator putty in a hi-vis color and place it on your leader about 16 or 18 inches from your fly. You’ll get used to relating where your fly is in relation to your strike indicator and this will help you locate your fly. If you still cannot find your fly on the water,  just watch the strike indicator. If there’s a rise near the indicator or if the indicator disappears, set the hook. This “mini-indicator” type fishing  helps not only with small fly fishing, but is also very helpful when fishing at dusk/dark or in other low visibility situations.

For more helpful hints and all your fly fishing needs, visit us at A.A. Outfitters Fly Shop in Blakeslee, Pa. Call toll free 800-443-8119. We can help!

THE RIGHT FLY LINE – CHANGE YOUR PERCEPTION OF A FLY ROD

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Believe it or not … when choosing a fly rod the biggest factor in deciding whether it’s for you or not may be the fly line you use to cast the rod.

Being the Owner of a Fly Shop, I’ve tried or fished hundreds of fly rods in the past 15 years. The line on the reel I’ve used while casting many rods has helped me make the decision of whether I would choose a rod for my personal use. There were many occasions when casting / trying a rod where I simply was completely “unimpressed”.  Changing the line changed my opinion from “unimpressed” to “love-it”! On a few occasions, as I was learning about this great “obsession”  of fly casting, I tried a different fly line on the same rod to discover the line choice often made a HUGE difference in how  rod a behaved. As a matter of fact, in some cases I LOVED a rod using one particular line, and HATED it using another. Nothing can affect a rods performance, behavior and action, given the same person casting the rod, than the line.

My advice, if  looking for a new fly rod, is to cast the rod with a line a professional can recommend for that rod. Most Fly Shop Professionals will know what lines work best with a particular rod. Also consider your personal preferences. You may be able to choose a line that may “slow down” a rod, a line which will not overlaod a rod if casting longer distances, a line which would be more suitable for short casting, etc.

Some examples of a few fly lines for Trout Rods and their differences / benefits are:

Rio Grand or Scientific Anglers GPX Fly Lines – Similar lines. We recommend these lines for fast action rods like Sage Z Axis or TCX or a Winston BIIMx or Winston BIIx fly rod. Both lines are best for fast action rods. Most fast action fly rods load best with a line like these.  The advantage of these lines on fast action rods is that these lines help load fast rods quickly and more easily, and at most distances.

Rio Gold, Scientific Anglers Trout Fly Lines - Best for Medium Fast Fly Rods. These general purpose, high-end fly lines are great all-around lines for most rods, particularly medium-fast action rods. The newer Rio Gold is a favorite for Medium-Fast to Medium action rods.

Rio  Trout LT, Scientific Anglers XPS, Sage Quiet DT Fly Lines – Excellent choice for medium to slower action rods, shorter distances, delicate presentation casting. Nicely loads a medium or slower action rod with a slower, more relaxed casting motion.

Of course personal preferences, type of fishing conditions, species and locations and casting style are most important in choosing a rod. But if you try a rod and it doesn’t seem to be exactly what you need or want, check the line and maybe try another … it may make a world of difference.

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Once in awhile, I have to brag a little about Our Shop, A.A. Outfitters. What sets us apart from the others, I believe, is our staff. As owner of A.A. His dedication to Stanley Cooper Trout Unlimited, here in Northeast Pa. has made that Chapter successful for years. In my opinion, Mike is one of the best Fly Tyers in the Country. His ability to tie and teach and his knowledge of the history of fly tying certainly make him an expert.  He has taught hundreds of students how to tye flies. His knowledge of the Delaware River, where he fishes most often, is unsurpassed. Mike also fishes in Montana almost yearly.  Mike and his enthusiastic willingness to share his love of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying are a valuable asset to A.A. Outfitters.

Mike Santulli is old school Fly Fishing personified. Our Shop’s Elder Statesman brings decades of knowledge, and experience  to A.A. Outfitters. Mike has ben fly fishing and tying flies forever. Mike has a great passion for Fly Fishing and Fly Tying. He loves the sport.  Mike fishes ALOT! He’s always willing and able to help anyone with a question or problem. Mike will drop anything and sit down with anyone at the fly tying bench to help. He can always help with questions about Trout fishing in Pennsylvania. His positive and inviting personality brings our Customers back.

Rod Gable’s easy going, helpful personality and years of experience both fly fishing and fly tying are a big positive for us at A.A. Outfitters. Rod has years of experience fly fishing in Pennsylvania for Trout, Panfish and Bass. Rod has years of experience fishing for upstate New York’s Salmon and Steelhead. He’s fished in Pulaski, New York before most of us even started fly fishing. He’s our resident Pocono’s “local” so Rod is most familiar with local fishing and history.

Gene Ercolani is the owner of A.A. Outfitters for approximately 12 years and has been involved in the “business” of fly fishing for over 15 years. Gene has been fly fishing for Trout, Smallmouth and Panfish and fly tying since the 1970s in Pennsylvania. As the owner of A.A. Outfitters, he has the most experience with, and knowledge of, all of our products. Gene has flyfished in many states including Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and of course, Pennsylvania. He brings the saltwater fly fishing experience to the Shop having fished for (and caught) Bonefish,  Jacks, Snook, Permit, Blues, Stripers and Albies on a fly.  Gene has been fly fishing the Susquehanna River for Smallmouth Bass for many years and knows the Susquehanna in our area very well.

BREATHABLE WADERS – HELPFUL INFORMATION

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Here’s a little helpful information about breathable waders, from A.A. Outfitters. We’ve been selling breathable waders since they were invented. We’ve seen a lot of brands, styles, designs. We’ve sold tons and have heard Customer feedback thousands of times, on many brands. I’ve acquired a lot of experience selling and wearing breathable waders for over 15 years and have received a lot of education on the subject. So maybe I could pass along some helpful insight.

Firstly, there is a difference between “breathable” waders and “Gore Tex” waders. Although both are breathable waders, Gore Tex is the best fabric for breathable waders. I could go into some very technical stuff describing the differences, but Gore Tex is, by far, more consistently waterproof/breathable and consistently more durable than other “breathable” fabrics. We’ve tried other types of breathable waders at A.A. Outfitters but our policy on most products we sell, is to recommend and sell products we can trust to help our Customers, and therefore our reputation.   Selling waders that have a history of leaking  just isn’t something we do here, and we’ve “thrown-out” a few brands for this reason. We want our Customers to be able to rely on us and trust us so we stay away from products which are not of high quality, especially waders. We’ve found that Simms Gore Tex waders have proven to be the highest quality, over many years.

A few tips on wearing and caring for breathable waders …..  Most breathable waders are designed to allow heat and moisture to transfer thru the breathable fabric, wicking moisture out of the waders, hence the breathability. Understanding this, we must realize that properly layering underneath breathable waders is what keeps us warm and dry. Wearing cotton fabrics do not offer much insulation and will actually try to hold moisture (sweat) in, sort of defeating the purpose of the breathable fabric. A wicking / fast drying layer or two, like Simms Waderwick, Guide Fleece, or Superlight Pants will help keep you dry and can keep you as warm or cool as you want by choosing the right pants and layering.

Obviously, no waders are “bullet-proof” so it helps to be careful, as much as possible. Yanking a hook into any waders will make a hole. Hiking thru thorns, sliding down a bank and climbing rusty fences aren’t good ideas and will make any wader leak. You can, however, do a few things to help prolong the life and quality of your waders. Give them a good rinsing with a hose, inside and out occasionally. Turn waders inside out and hang them to dry ocassionally to prevent mildew. Washing waders and applying Revivex will help water repellency. Don’t store waders in extreme heat or cold. Hang-up waders when not in use to allow them to dry and to allow some air circulation inside.

I hope this helps. For more help and the full line of great Simms Waders with many sizes to choose from, visit us at A.A. Outfitters in Blakeslee, Pa. Call toll free 800-443-8119.
