FLY FISHING CONDITIONS FOR THE POCONOS / LEHIGH RIVER 5-9-10

Monday, May 10th, 2010

This past weekend was a tough one with winds constantly blowing, gusting 30 to 40 mph and cold air temps. This week should be better as the weather settles.  Water levels are good. The Lehigh below the dam has been at wadeable levels the past few days. Hendricksons and other early flies are over here. March Browns have started and there’s been lots of caddis around. Blue Winged Olives are around and Sulphurs should be starting in a week or so. Fishing should be great this week.

A.A. OUTFITTERS SPECIALS UPDATE 4-27-10 & FISHING CONDITIONS

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Our SPECIALS have recently been updated at www.aaoutfitters.com  Go to the “SPECIALS” page for some very limited deals including Winston Fly Rods. Check back again in a week or two as I’ll be adding some more SPECIAL OFFERS to our SPECIALS page. Order online at www.aaoutfitters.com or call A.A. Outfitters toll free 800-443-8119.

We received a good amount of rain over the past weekend here in the Poconos. Water levels are high and night time lows the next couple of days will be below freezing so fishing may be slow the next few days. Look toward this upcoming weekend for better conditions as water levels should be good by then and warmer temps move in.

FLY FISHING IN THE POCONOS-POCONOS FISHING CONDITIONS / NORTHEAST PA. 4-7-10

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

We want to give an updae for fishing conditions here in the Poconos / Northeast Pa for the first week of April, 2010. We had a bunch of rain/snow about 7 days to 2 weeks ago. Water levels were high because of this, up until yesterday so there hasn’t been too much fishing. Checking today, water levels have gotten to fishable and the weather has been great the past few days. Today it’s actually 84 degrees here in the Poconos … rare for the first week of April. A few Guys have been out in the Clubs and Special Regs areas the past few days and are catching fish, mostly on nymphs, beadheads and streamers/wooly buggers.

Stop in the Shop – A.A. Outfitters Fly Shop here in Blakeslee, Pa. We’re fully stocked and ready to go. Call 800-443-8119 for more info.

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Here’s an update on our fly fishing conditions for the Poconos / Northeast Pennsylvania from A.A. Outfitters Fly Shop.

This week’s weather (3/12 to 3/19) is fantastic. We’ve had sunny days with high temps in the middle 60s and no rain for over a week. Water levels were a bit high after the rain we got over a week ago but we’re in pretty good shape now.  Some Little Black Stoneflies are around and there have been reports of a few Blue Quills here and there. Some Special Regs areas have been fishing well.

For more information and all your Fly Fishing needs, stop in the Shop, A.A. Outfitters in the Poconos (Blakeslee, Pa.) or give us a call toll free 800-443-8119. Visit A.A. Outfitters on the web at www.aaoutfitters.com

PRE-SEASON CHECKLIST FOR PA. TROUT SEASON, MARCH 2010

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Here are a few things / reminders as we get ready for the 2010 Trout Season, here in Pennsylvania. As a Fly Shop Owner, involved in this business for over 15 years, I may be able to give a few “helpful hints” as you get ready for this upcoming season.

Check flylines: Go over your lines to check for cracks or excessive wear. The average Fisherman will get 4 or 5 years out of a line, of course this depends on how much you fish, but how you care for and store your line is important. Never store your line in excessive cold or hot areas …. the trunk of your car is about the worst place. Avoid getting insect repellent on lines, which can destroy them. Clean lines often with soapy water (dish detergent which doesn’t leave a residue, is good). A line dressing can be applied to most lines, which may repel dirt and make lines more slick.

Waders: Check waders for leaks. Repair if necessary. Often, Aquaseal works great on wader repairs. Be carefully to make sure you do not void warranties by doing “self repairs” on waders. Send waders back to Manufacturers for repairs, inspection or replacement NOW, instead of waiting until it’s too late. You can clean nawders and apply Revivex to breathable waders to add water repellency without losing breathability. Waders should be stored in moderate temperatures and hanging waders instead of folding/rolling them is a good idea. Turn waders inside out to allow air circulation which prevents mildew. Rinse-off inside of waders occasionally.

Check Rods: never store a rod in a tube when wet. The moisture will ruin wood reel seats and is not good for wraps, guides, etc. Check guides and be sure there’s no damage, check reel seat. Clean your rod! I’ve found that most never wipe off their rod and as they cast, people notice the line doesn’t “shoot” very well. Remember that your line rubs along the rod blank as it passed thru the guides and a dirty rod causes a lot of friction on the line, slowing it down. Give your rod a wipe down ocassionally and a wipe with armour all, son of a gun or furniture polish helps. Get rod repairs done NOW, before the season starts because many wait until Spring to send a rod in for repair, then suddenly Manufacturers are backed-up on repairs, adding another week or two to turn-around times.

Check Fly Boxes: Now’s the time to take inventory. A good supply of early season flies should be in your box for early season. Include beadhead nymphs like Prince, Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns and Hare’s Ears. A few streamers and wooly buggers are good. Little black stoneflies, blue quills, quill gordons, tan caddis, hendricksons, red quills are a good start for early season.

Leaders and tippet: Nylon leaders and tippet have a shelf life and are adversely affected by UV (sunlight), extreme heat and wear from use. Best if stored at moderate temperatures, in a dark place. Check leaders and tippet and replace after a few years. It sucks to lose a few nice fish, right off the bat because of old leader and tippet.

At A.A. Outfitters, we can help get you prepared for the 2010 season which is right arount the corner. Stop in the Shop in Blakeslee, Pa. or call 800-443-8119.

FLY FISHING CONDITIONS UPDATE FOR THE POCONOS, PA.

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Not much to report as far as fishing, here in the Poconos. We’re waiting for some kind of break in the weather but until now, we haven’t gotten any. Usually, we get some days in the mid-forties by now but we’re stuck in a continuous 28-35 degree high temperature weather pattern. Can’t get a break so we haven’t been out. No insect activity in our Pocono freestone streams and water temps are low. So …. no choice but to wait, of course until we get some warmer weather. When it gets into the mid forties, I’m sure we’ll get out there and we’ll start getting some reports from our local Guys. Meanwhile, stop in the Shop, A.A. Outfitters, in Blakeslee to see all the latest gear from Simms, Sage, Brodin, Bauer, Hardy and more! See us on Twitter and sign-up to be a fan of A.A. Outfitters on Facebook for updates, special sale promotions and more!
