POCONO FISHING CONDITIONS - 5-2-08

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Fishing has been very good for April. Normally, conditions are a bit ’severe” in April, with high water and cold temperatures. But water is low and water temps are excellent, with the exception of the Lower Lehigh (below the dam) being a bit too cold for surface activity. We’ve had good hatches of Hendricksons, Caddis, Blue Quills and Little Black Stoneflies.

Stream/Fishing Conditions for the Poconos - 3-14-08

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Basically, it’s still Winter here in the Poconos. Daytime high temps have been in the 30s or 40s and lows in the 20s or 30s. I think it’s going to be a little while before Spring weather settles in. We’ve had a ton of rain, a record high in February and already received several inches of rain in March. On the posotive side, the “water table” is full with no Spring drought in sight. On the negative side, the water’s been very high and very cold, making it tough for the hard-core fishermen to get out there for some early season fishing.
So, basically conditions are very tough right now with very high and very cold water conditions in the Pocono rivers and streams. We’ll keep you updated here at A.A. Outfitters, so check back here often, stop in the Shop or call us at 800-443-8119.
Thanks,

Getting Ready for the 2008 Fishing Season!

Friday, March 7th, 2008

The Shop is getting busier and there’s definitely the usual pre-season “buzz” around here. Cabin Fever is definitely taking its toll. Now’s the time to get out your gear and give it a quick “once-over”. Here’s a checklist of common issues which should be addressed before the season starts.
Waders - check for leaks BEFORE you get out there. Was there a small leak at the end of the season last year which you never got to? Now’s the time. It’s also a good idea to give your Simms Goretex Waders a cleaning which will enhance their performance. Use REVIVEX to help repel water.
Fly Lines - Give your line a good cleaning with mild soap and water, rinse and apply a conditioner where applicable (some lines don’t need a conditioner).
Reels - Check reels for grit inside, give them a wipe and lubricate if necessary. There are cork conditioners for reels with cork drag systems.
Flies - Check your boxes and do a little inventory. Make sure you have the necessary early season flies. Discard and rusty hooks, used flies with dull hook points, etc.
Leader and Tippet - Leaders and Tippet can “go bad”. Check for strength and check tippet spools which may be nearly empty. No fun to pull tippet off your spool on the stream, only to find out there was only 6 inches left on the spool!
Hope this helps - see us at A.A. Outfitters Fly Shop. We can help with all your Fly Fishing questions, needs! Call 800-443-8119 or visit us in Blakeslee, Pa.

SUSQUEHANNA RIVER SMALLMOUTH FISHING

Monday, August 6th, 2007

This is one of the best Summers yet for Susquehanna River Smallmouth fishing! The White Fly Hatch is on. Can’t complain when we’re catching 8 to 10 fish in the 12 inch to 17 inch size range plus a few smaller fish on dry flies in 2 hours of fishing each evening. Throw in a 4 pound Channel Cattie on a dry fly and what more can you ask for!
Sure beats the slow Trout fishing while stressing the Trout in the low, warm Trout Streams this Summer.
Call us at A.A. Outfitters Fly Shop for more info. Phone 800-443-8119.

Fishing Conditions 7-27-07

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Things are a little slow in the Poconos as is typical for mid-summer. Low water conditions make it tough along with the lack of prolific hatches in the summer. The Lehigh River, below the dam has been fishing OK. Light Cahills, Slate Drakes, little BWO and midges are best bet “hatch-wise”. Terrestrials are also working.

The Susquehanna River has been FANTASTIC for the past few weeks with “numbers-caught” for a few hours of fishing being in the 20s. Casting to rising fish, we’ve been catching most of our Smallmouth on our small poppers. The latest rain put a stop to the great fishing in the Susquehanna and we just hope the fishing will resume as the water level drops back to where it was.

FISHING CONDITIONS FOR POCONOS 7-11-07

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Many smaller streams and headwaters are basically ‘running out of water” at this point. Water is very low and on the warm side. hopefully the rain forecast for the next day will help. However, the Lehigh below the dam is fishing well with good flows and temps. Slate Drakes, little BWO, light Cahills and midges are around. Try Terrestrials like hoppers ants, beetles also.
The Susquehanna is at a very wadeable level and the Smallmouth fishing is pretty good. The White Fly hatch should be starting soon and should make topwater fishing more productive. Call A.A. Outfitters Fly Shop for more info 800-443-8119.
Also, our SPECIALS have been updated at www.aaoutfitters.com End-of-the-season closeouts will be added within the next month or two as they become available, so check back often!

Fishing Conditions for Poconos 6-26-07

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Very low water conditions here. Lack of rain has us in a drought or near-drought situation. Streams are low and clear and fishing’s a little tough. Best bet is early morning or evening for trout fishing in the Pocono Area. A few sulphurs left, some light cahills, slate drakes starting, small BWO, midges, stoneflies and a few caddis. Terrestrials are somewhat effective.
The Susquehanna has started fishing well for Smallmouth. Low water is making for easy access as far as wading goes. Clousers and small poppers effective.
A.A. Outfitters Fly Shop offers full day and half-day guiding for Smallmouth on the Susquehanna River, which is only 30 minutes from the Shop. Call 800-443-8119.

Fishing Conditions for the Poconos - June 14, 2007

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

We sure could use some more water! We’ve gotten a little rain, which helps, but streams are surely still running low and clear. Good news is that water temps are still good and cool here in the Poconos. Lots of Midges, some Sulphurs and Light Cahills and Caddis around. There’s been some productive fishing with terrestrials and attractors like Humpies, Stimulators. Call A.A. Outfitters for more information or to book a Guide Trip. Phone A.A. Outfitters Fly Shop at 800-443-8119.

Fishing Conditions - Lehigh River and Poconos 5-29-07

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Fishing has been great last few weeks. Great caddis hatches, March Browns and now good Sulphur and Light Cahills. Fishing best in the evenings. Good flows on lower Lehigh and upper Lehigh still OK but getting low … we could use some rain. Call A.A. Outfitters for all your Fly Fishing needs 800-443-8119.
