WELL, THERE’S NOT MUCH POSITIVE TO SAY ABOUT FISHING CONDITIONS HERE IN THE POCONOS THE FIRST WEEK OF JULY. A NEARLY RECORD-SETTING OR RECORD SETTING HEAT WAVE AND TOTAL LACK OF RAINFALL THE PAST FEW WEEKS HAS CAUSED EXTREME LOW AND “HOT” WATER. WE’RE SEEING WATER LEVELS AT THE LOWEST WE’VE EVER SEEN, WITH MANY “MEDIUM” SIZED STREAMS LIKE THE TOBYHANNA, UPPER LEHIGH AND BROADHEADS RUNNING AT 26 TO 50 CFS. WATER TEMPERATURES DURING THE DAY ON MANY STREAMS LIKE THESE ARE IN THE 80S. SOME POCONO STREAMS ARE REGISTERING WATER TEMPS OF 81 TO 86 DEGREES F.
OBVIOUSLY WE’RE NOT OUT FISHING MUCH THESE DAYS AND WE’RE HOPING FOR RAIN AND A COOL-DOWN. A FEW “FISHABLE” AREAS ARE THE LEHIGH BELOW THE DAM, THE LOWER LACKAWAXEN, THE WEST BRANCH OF THE DELAWARE. THESE AREAS HAVE COOLER WATER TEMPERATURES DUE TO CONTROLLED WATER RELEASES.
WE STILL HAVE A FEW ROSS LIMITED EDITION EVOLUTION LT RAINBOW TROUT REELS AVAILABLE. CALL A.A. OUTFITTERS TOLL FREE 800-443-8119 OR STOP IN THE SHOP, IN BLAKESLEE, PA.
We’re in “Summer mode” here in the Poconos. Most Fly Fishing activity is early mornings or evenings. Very low water conditions persist and hot weather has raised many stream temps into the 70s. Evenings are most productive in the Lehigh below the Dam with fish feeding on the surface. Small spinner patterns, little BWO wets and yellow stoneflies have been productive.
For more info, see us at A.A. Outfitters in Blakeslee, Pa. or call 800-443-8119.
Just a reminder that the Ross Evolution LT Rainbow Trout limited edition fly reels are still available. Call 800-443-8119 to order and reserve one of these reels.
LACK OF RAIN HAS MEANT LOW WATER CONDITIONS FOR THE PAST WEEK OR TWO HERE IN THE POCONOS. THANKFULLY IT HAS BEEN COOL THE PAST FEW DAYS. FISHING HAS BEEN GOOD FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS, MAINLY EARLY IN THE MORNING OR IN THE EVENINGS. BLUE WINGED OLIVES, SULPHURS, YELLOW STONEFLIES, SLATE DRAKES AND CADDIS HAVE BEEN AROUND. SOME GOOD SPINNER FALLS IN THE EVENING.
THE LEHIGH HAS A RELEASE SCHEDULED FOR THIS UPCOMING WEEKEND (12TH, 13TH) BUT RELEASES HAVE BEEN IN THE LOW 200 CFS FROM FRANCES WALTER DAM OTHERWISE, MAKING FOR EASIER WADING AND GOOD FISHING ON THE LEHIGH. SMALLER STREAMS HAVE HAD LOW WATER SO THE FISH HAVE BEEN A LITTLE SPOOKY DURING THE DAYTIME.

Our Striper Guide Barry Clemson has reported GREAT Fly Fishing for Stripers in the Merrimack River / Cape Ann area of Massachusetts. Fish are around in good numbers and better yet …. they’re BIG! Barry has reported quite a few “keeper” sized fish the past week or so.
If you’d like to have a great time with a fantastic Guide, give Barry a call (978)948-3750 or (603)534-0411. I personally can recommend Barry as one of the best Guide in the Massachusetts Northshore area. Book now before everyone finds out how good the fishing is!

This past weekend was a tough one with winds constantly blowing, gusting 30 to 40 mph and cold air temps. This week should be better as the weather settles. Water levels are good. The Lehigh below the dam has been at wadeable levels the past few days. Hendricksons and other early flies are over here. March Browns have started and there’s been lots of caddis around. Blue Winged Olives are around and Sulphurs should be starting in a week or so. Fishing should be great this week.

We received a good amount of rain over the past weekend here in the Poconos. Water levels are high and night time lows the next couple of days will be below freezing so fishing may be slow the next few days. Look toward this upcoming weekend for better conditions as water levels should be good by then and warmer temps move in.
Fishing has been good, here in the Poconos for the first week of the season. Blue Quills, Quill Gordons, Hendricksons, Red Quills and Caddis are around and fish have been feeding on the surface. Water levels generally are good with the exception of below the dam on the Lehigh, which has been up-and-down, like a yo-yo. Check levels below the dam before heading out. For more info, see us at A.A. Outfitters, in Blakeslee, Pa. Stop in the Shop for all your fly fishing needs.
