New Feature - Weekly Tips

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

We’re starting a new feature on our Weblog. I will try to give weekly or biweekly tips on Fly Fishing. These will cover a variety of subjects including care and maintenence of equipment and tackle, fly selection, fishing strategy, choosing / purchasing equipment, and more. Check back often. I hope I can pass on some of the information I’ve acquired over the past 30 years of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying and from my 13 years of working in / owning a Fly Shop.
First subject: Caring for Fly Lines / Line Maintenance
To get the most years of use from your Fly Line … keep it clean and dressed. A frequent question in the Shop is how to clean a fly line. We (and Fly Line Manufacturers) suggest using a mild household soap and water. Put Soapy water in a sink or bath tub. Let Fly Line in the water for a few minutes and gently pull line thru a soft cloth to remove dirt. Dry line and apply a Fly Line Dressing which helps the line resist dirt build-up, makes the line slick, and protects the line from friction. Scientific Anglers Line Dressing and Russ Peak are a few of the good line dressings available. You should clean and dress your line at least a few times a season and doing it more often will get you more years of use from your line.
Avoid storing your line in extreme heat, extreme cold, sunlight. Avoid getting Bug Repellent (very bad for lines) and other chemicals on fly lines. They can deteriorate the coatings.

Now’s the time to sign-up for A.A. Outfitters Fly Tying Classes. We’re starting to get bookings for the upcoming season. See website at top of page or call 800-443-8119 for more info. As a related note, prices will change and are expected to be increased by 15% to 20% due to the Pa Fish Commission’s new requirement for a Guide’s License. The new required license, insurance, certifications will create an additional expense for our Guides, Instructors and the Shop.

Pa Guides License

Monday, March 6th, 2006

Here’s some news. I just found out recently thaty a Guides License is required for guiding and instruction in Pennsylvania! They snuck this one in there without much notice so there isn’t much time for most of us to get our application in, insurance and first aid / cpr certification! See the PA fish and boat commission site for more details.
