Fishing Tips - Care Of Goretex / Breathable Waders
Here’s some tips and facts that can help with caring of your breathable waders.
Keep in mind, when buying waders, that there is a difference between “Breathable Waders” and “Goretex” Waders. Goretex is waterproof and breathable. It is impervious to bad reactions and deterioration (leakage) caused by chemicals such as silicone, bug spray, deet, suntan lotions and sunscreens, fly floatants, etc. “Waterproof / Breathable” waders not using Goretex can easily leak from damage to the lining or coatings caused by such chemicals. Goretex waders generally are much more durable and easy to care for.
Of course, try not to get into situations where you’ll cause punctures. Constant kneeling on rough surfaces, walking through thorns, falling down embankments or off a cliff are obvious no-nos!
Next, make sure you get waders that fit. Waders that don’t fit will cause abrasion on the inside of the legs, cause stress on seams and cause wear to the fabric. Simms and Cloudveil are some examples of good Wader Companies which offer many sizes and almost everyone can get a pair “off the rack” which will fit. Make sure the foot and boot fit comfortably so there is no abrasion inside the boot, causing wear on the bootie when you walk (and blisters on your feet!).
Don’t store your waders wet. It’s best to let them hang and dry out, letting some air circulate inside, preventing mildew and odors. Don’t store them in extreme heat or cold. Give them a cleaning once in awhile by simply rinsing the waders off inside and out. Use a garden hose, a shower or follow cleaning instructions. Breathability can be reduced if dirt is allowed to fill the very small spaces within the outer fabric. Cleaning will help. Some waders, like Simms, are treated with a water repellent to help water, stains and soil run-off the outer fabric. This coating can be replaced with Revivex if it wears off in a few years.
